Determining Version / Release / Industry In ASC/X12

The following describes how Framework EDI determines what version, release and industry of the ASC/X12 standard are to be used in the syntax verification of each semantic level.

• Interconnect Mailbag .  The Interconnect Mailbag Version Number (I19) element contains the version and release of the standard that the Interconnect Mailbag header and trailer adheres to.  The data element is in the first position of the Interconnect Mailbag header (IH) segment, and its 5-character value is formatted as follows:
  • positions 1 to 3 indicate the version; and
  • positions 4 and 5 indicate the release.

• Interchange.  The Interchange Control Version Number (I11) element contains the version and release of the standard that the Interchange header and trailer adheres to.  The data element is the twelfth element in the Interchange header (ISA) segment, and its 5-character value is formatted as follows: 
  • positions 1 to 3 indicate the version; and
  • positions 4 and 5 indicate the release.

• Functional Group .  The Version / Release / Industry Identifier Code (480) element contains the version, release and industry of the standard that the Functional Group header and trailer, and its underlying Transaction Sets adhere to.  The data element is the eighth element in the Functional Group header (GS) segment, and its 12-character value is formatted as follows:
  
  • positions 1 to 3 indicate the version;
  • positions 4 to 6 indicate the release; and
  • positions 7 to 12 indicate the industry or trade association.
  
  Note: For ASC/X12, the code in the Responsible Agency Code (455) element must be "X".

• Transaction Set.  For ASC/X12, no version information is specified for the Transaction Set, and this semantic entity adheres to the version specified by the Functional Group.
