Determining Version / Release / Industry In UN/EDIFACT

The following describes how Framework EDI determines what version, release and industry of the UN/EDIFACT standard are to be used in the syntax verification of each semantic level.

• Interchange.  The Syntax Version Number (0002) component element specify the syntax version to use.  The component element is in the second position of the Syntax Identifier (S001) composite element; the composite is the first element in the Interchange Header (UNB) segment.

• Functional Group .  The Functional Group header (UNG) has a composite element Message Version (S008), which has 3 component elements in the following order:
  • Message Version Number (0052) specifies the version;
  • Message Release Number (0054) specifies the release; and
  • Association Assigned Code (0057) specifies the industry or trade association.

• Message.  The Message header (UNH) has a composite element Message Identifier (S009) composite element, which has, among other component elements, the following 3 component elements that indicate version, release and industry.
  • Message Version Number (0052) specifies the version;
  • Message Release Number (0054) specifies the release; and
  • Association Assigned Code (0057) specifies the industry or trade association.
