Add Object Variable to a Data Element

To add an object variable to a data element, take the following steps:

  1. Highlight a data element, and then right click.
  2. In the popup menu, select the option "Add Object Variable".
  3. In the dialog box, enter a unique name for the new object variable.

The following steps demonstrates how to add an Object Variable to a Data Element reference.  For example, the Object Variable with the name "TaxLocType" will be added to the Data Element reference 309 (Tax Identification Number) having ordinal number 2, which is contained in Data Segment TAX (Tax Reference).  The segment reference TAX has an ordinal number 6 in the ASC/X12 Transaction Set 850.

  1. Highlight and right-click the data element reference where the Object Variable is to be added.

  2. From the popup menu select "Add Object Variable".

  3. The following dialog box will show.

The Transaction Set/Message ID field displays the ASC/X12 Transaction Set or UN/EDIFACT Message that the Data Element belongs to.  The Segment Reference Ordinal displays the ordinal number of the Data Segment reference containing the Data Element that the Object Variable will be added to.  The Data Element Ordinal displays the ordinal number of the Data Element.  In the example shown, the Object Variable is being added to the Data Element with ordinal number 2 in the Data Segment reference.  The Data Segment reference is at ordinal 6 in the ASC/X12 Transaction Set 850.

  4. Enter a unique Object Variable name at the edit box "Variable Name" and then press "OK".  In the example shown, the variable name "TaxLocType" has been entered.

  5. After successfully adding the Object Variable, it will be displayed under the branch "Object Variables" under the Data Element reference.  In the example, the variable "TaxLocType" that has been added will appear as an addition to other Object Variables that might have already existed and assigned to the same location.

  6. The Object Variable Table will also be updated with the new variable name that was just added.
