Certificate System Store

Importing Certificates from a Personal Information Exchange (PFX) file

A PFX file may contain more than one certificate.  To import certificate(s) to the system store from a PFX file, take the following steps:

  1. Select and highlight the system store where the extended certificate will be imported to.

  2. Right click, and select Import Certificate from the popup menu.

  3. The following dialog box is displayed:

    Enter the following:

    1. File Name - Enter the full path name of the file to import.
    2. Personal Information Exchange - Select the option to import a PFX file.
    3. Password - Enter the password that was used to secure the PFX file.
  4. Click OK to import the file.
  5. After the file is successfully imported, the certificates in the PFX file will be stored in the selected certificate store, and all their associated private keys will be added to the key container database of the Cryptographic Service Provider.  NOTE: The name of the key container created for each private key is a unique GUID string and does not indicate as to which certificate it was created for.  To find out what private key is associated with a certificate, display the properties of the certificate instead.  See Viewing Certificate Properties.
