The Functional Group (ASC/X12)

For ASC/X12, the functional group is mandatory.  Functional groups envelope transaction sets, and all transaction set under the same functional group must have all been categorized under the same functional identifier code.  This allows the recipient to route the grouped transaction sets to the internal department that handles them.

The group is bounded by a functional group header data segment (GS) and a functional group trailer data segment (GE).  There must be at least one transaction set in the functional group.
